Virtually every team extends their Atlassian products for specific use cases. That’s why the Atlassian Marketplace exists, where developers provide thousands of apps and integrations for a wide variety of scenarios – from comprehensive functional extensions to small helpers.
For your company, the functionality of an app is of course primarily decisive. After all, your teams want to complete their work effectively and efficiently. An app must fit their processes and functional requirements. It should help solve a problem or fill a gap.
So far, so good. But beyond functionality, there are additional standards that your team should apply when identifying the best app solution for their purposes. While security and compliance may not be particularly exciting topics and aren’t very popular in many teams, they are essential for your organization. A violation of data protection guidelines or a security vulnerability can quickly lead to significant costs, damage to reputation, and legal consequences.
Fortunately, Atlassian now makes it as easy as possible for you to filter out secure and compliant apps from the crowd.
The Marketplace offers several helpful filtering criteria for selecting app solutions. These include properties to find apps with desired functionalities, as well as non-functional attributes. And these non-functional attributes help you identify apps that not only meet the requirements of your use cases but also comply with your company’s security and compliance policies.
Apps with the Runs on Atlassian property are third-party applications specifically developed for integration with Atlassian products. They run completely within Atlassian’s infrastructure with its robust security and data protection measures, send no data to third-party servers, and support Data Residency; they automatically adopt the Data Residency setting that you’ve defined for the main product.
Thus, no external servers are involved, and the apps clearly fulfill the technical requirement no data egress.
There are two ways to filter Marketplace apps by the Runs on Atlassian category.
The official Atlassian Marketplace is the main source for all apps. Simply navigate from the home screen to any category. Now you’ll see several compact dropdown menus side by side directly under the header area of the page: Use Cases, Product, and so on. Here you can activate filters via checkboxes.
Since we’re talking about Runs on Atlassian, the Trust Signals menu is relevant for you. When you activate the corresponding box, only appropriately certified apps will be displayed.
The second option is to search for suitable apps from within an Atlassian Cloud product. This in-app view has the advantage that the system automatically narrows down the selection, showing only those apps that are compatible with the application.
As an administrator, navigate to the settings of your product and look for the menu item Apps or Manage Apps (depending on the product). Here too, you can access the Marketplace and apply the filter mentioned above. The Runs on Atlassian label will also be displayed in the app management interface.
The major advantage of these apps lies in increased security and data protection compliance. Since the data strictly remains within the Atlassian infrastructure, the risk of data leaks is significantly minimized while simultaneously reducing the technical complexity of the software infrastructure that your company needs to handle.
The Runs on Atlassian designation allows you to select apps that not only fulfill the functional wishes of your teams but also meet the highest security and compliance standards. In this way, your organization finds a balance between functionality and security, allowing your teams to work productively while simultaneously providing optimal protection for your company’s data.
